Acute Resolute

New York has always had a magnetic attraction for me, but on this trip she lost some of her sex appeal. I'll visit her again in a heartbeat, but let me explain.

I once passed up an opportunity to go work for Richard Avedon. It's a long story, but I chose to go backpack in Europe for six months instead. I came back from that wonderful & LONG trip- broke and lonely. It was perfect timing to meet and fall in love with my wife. We moved to Denver soon after we were married. Here's my point. I have often wondered, "What my life would be like if I had jumped on the opportunity to join Avedon's team?"

I just got back from a 9 day trip to NY.  This trip and other visits have been confirmation for me that New York is truly one of the greatest cities on earth, but I'm happy for the divine providence that put me in my current place.  I'm loosing my regrets.

I hope I'm not stepping on your toes if you live in NY. I'm just forming a personal resolution that I love where I am now (In Denver) more than ever, (and that pretty woman with the ruby red lips off in the distance isn't my type now that I've seen her up close. Perhaps if we had met in another life...)

Here are some random images from my last two days:

Here are some random observations:
-I believe that printed portfolios are becoming a thing of the past. (Do you agree?? Please comment if you do or don't.)
-Don't clip your fingernail on the Subway. It's disgusting.
-If your watch alarm goes off in the Subway, turn it off immediately.
-The sun is much warmer in Denver, even at the same temp.
-Don't go to show your book the week magazines are closing.
-The rowboats in Central Park are an excellent date.

Thanks again to Jonathan and Lynn for letting us stay at your place!

I'm torn about printed portfolios. For photo, i think online has the often overlooked bonus of light - it's the whole slide vs. print thing without all the hassles of a projector. Since I still dabble in some graphic design, I like printed portfolios because I love paper textures and other details that are missed online... the problem is that 90% of the stuff i do now is web work, so it doesn't make much sense for me to have a printed portfolio

Bryce, as someone who moved to Denver from NYC after living there for 5 and a half years, I'll tell you that I also LOVE living in Denver. And I'm not sure I would appreciate it like I do had I moved straight here from Texas. I still love New York though.

I'm glad you experienced the grossness of someone clipping nails on the subway. I used to witness this all the time - fingernails flying every which way. So freaking gross. And when people would litter on the train, I got to the point where I would tell them the dropped something. Never got up the nerve to confront a fingernail clipper though. After all, they're holding a teeny weapon!

I still love looking at a printed portfolio. I think they're worth it. Online is fine, but I'll take a print any day.

Cheers! Great photos as usual.

xo,
Alese

Thanks for the feedback. Your comments are all so valid. I guess I'm trying to figure out if all the energy I spend doing this is worth it. Probably 95% of the people who have hired me in the last year never saw my book, they just see online pix. I'm trying to decide where to focus my momentum.

Bryce - I am in awe of your photos...you are a truly talented photographer. You have left me inspired to learn more about photography! And your thoughts / insights about living in NYC are spot on...

Thanks Kristen! I've been doing this a while, but I'm always learning too. I try to be an open book, so shoot me any questions you have and I'll try to get back to you.

For every shot here, there are 20 that fail to impress me. For every person photographed here, there are 5 that ignored me or said they don't want to be photographed. My best advice is to shoot, shoot, shoot!
